20 year old Kehlani Parrish or strictly Kehlani, is a singer from Oakland, California who got her start on American’s Got Talent in 2011. However, she was not yet a solo artist, Kehlani was first part of the group Poplyfe. However, that didn’t last too long after judges told her they believed the group to be holding her back and that it was best she proceed with a solo career.
Kelhani debuted her mixtape Cloud 19 in 2014 and instantly people took a liking to it. Complex Mag ranked 28 of “50 Best Albums of 2014,” and was put on Pitchfork‘s “Overlooked Mixtapes 2014.” But that’s not all, Billboard also picked up on this dreamy artist and put her song ‘Till the Morning’ as one of “Emerging Picks of the Weeks” back in November 2014.
Kehlani is inspired by a variety go 90’s girl groups, other singers like; Lauryn Hill, India Arie, Stevie Wonder, and Musiq Soulchild and non artistic influences; Frida Kahlo, Gandhi, and Martin Luther King Jr. In my opinion, another reason why I love her, is that she is about saying something. Kehlani does not shy away from starting a movement even if its riot inside of a person. That is something that some artist have yet to accomplish.
A year later, Kelhani dropped her second mixtape featuring artists like Chance the Rapper and BJ the Chicago Kid, You Should Be Here, which became my personal obsession for the past few months. You Should Be Here It ranked at number 5 on Billboard’s “Top R&B/ Hip Hop albums.”
My personals faves off this mixtape include:
1.”The Way” featuring Chance the Rapper
3. You Should Be Here
Now, we’re just waiting for her album to drop. The word is we can expect it in 2016, so cross your fingers.
This star is ambiguity is exactly what draws attention towards her. Her look, her sound we definitely do not want to sleep on this one. Trust.
