This past week was and continues to be a hot mess all across the board! To start off, Jada Pinkett Smith has made it very clear she is not here for the Oscars this year. On Martin Luther King, Jr. Day the actress posted a video stating that we shouldn’t expect her at the award ceremony this year.
The actress declared she will boycott the Oscar’s this year due to the lack of diversity in their nominations. She even asked for other black actors come to her aid, of course one already has, Spike Lee.
Check out her video above to see hear her explanation.
A few people may of supported Jada but one actress close to Will Smith did not. Janet Hubert, better known as “Aunt Viv” on the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. Here’s where it get ugly. Janet decided to make a video of her own coming at the entire Smith family for excluding actors in their own way. She even insinuates this boycott originates from neither one of them being nominated and that in the end they should suck it up, as there are bigger things to worry about.
Don’t believe Aunt Viv had that in her? See for yourself.
Don’t think Jada went down without having the final say. The actress, wife and mother disclosed a few words to Entertainment Tonight in response to Janet’s commentary.
“Here’s the deal: this whole Oscars controversy isn’t really about the Oscars. Really, it’s my plea to ask our community, people of color, to take back our power so that we can use it in all sectors of our community, and right now, specifically with African American people, we have some very serious issues that we as a people have to move together on. I’m hoping that we can find ways to step together in this, instead of finding ways to fight each other. I got love for everybody.”
Surprisingly, Jada’s husband also had a few words to spill on the topic. Thursday morning, on Good Morning America, the Concussion actor dropped a few lines on the diversity in Hollywood, his issues and most importantly the elephant in the room. For the second year in a row all 20 major nominations for Academy Awards are once again, white.
He also doesn’t fail to mention that Jada would’ve continued with her decision regardless if he had been nominated or not.
“We’ve discussed it.We’re part of this community but at this current time, we’re uncomfortable to stand there and say that this is OK…My wife’s not going. It would be awkward to show up with Charlize [Theron],”
Will mentioned that he was out of the country when the Gotham actress made her public announcement, that they will me m.i.a at the Oscars but either way he stands by her side.
“She’s deeply passionate and when she is moved she has to go. I heard her words and I was knocked over. I was happy to be married to that woman…There is a position that we hold in this community, and if we’re not part of the solution, we’re part of the problem. It was her call to action, for herself, and for me and for our family to be a part of the solution.”
If this didn’t make Will miss the other Aunt Viv more, than I don’t know what will lol.
Apparently, Janet Hubert couldn’t let the Smith’s have the last word. Aunt Viv has followed up with the debate in an interview with the Los Angeles Times, calling this “ridiculousness.”
I’m a real freedom fighter.I’m not a pretend freedom fighter. I stand up for other actresses, other people. The Smiths just irked me because they are such pretenders, and everything is a photo op. It’s just self-contrived because her hubby didn’t get a nomination.”
And just incase any of us forgot Hubert’s distaste of Will Smith, she took the time to remind us of that.
“We are simply and merely entertainment. We take on and wear the masks of characters. That’s what we’re paid to do. Someone like Will Smith has not come up through the ranks like most actors, so for him to be complaining the most is the most ridiculous thing I have ever seen.”
